Living the sweet & savory life…
I’m Joy, a pastry chef and freelance writer based in Brooklyn. I grew up in Columbus, OH and studied political science at UChicago before moving out east. In New York, I attended pastry school at the Institute of Culinary Education (ICE) in the evenings while working an office job and made the full transition to the food industry in 2019 after completing my summer externship at Oxalis, a one-Michelin star neighborhood bistro in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn.
Along the way, I competed in and won the 2019 “Cookin’ with Allagash” cooking contest at ICE, receiving scholarship funds and a trip to Allagash brewery in Maine as part of the prize. I was also a 2019 Les Dames d’Escoffier New York (LDNY) scholarship recipient. LDNY’s scholarship program recognizes promising future female leaders in the food, fine beverage, and hospitality industries.
I worked most recently on the pastry team at Gramercy Tavern, a beloved and iconic restaurant institution in New York’s Flatiron district. I’m currently staying busy by baking up a new product, GEM CAKES, available for pickup in Brooklyn now!
My writing/recipes have appeared in Basically, Food52, Bon Appétit, Eater at Home, and The Manual, and JCP was featured in the New York Times.
